THE
STONE CHILD, a synopsis...
written by Christopher Martini and Brett Duncan
THE STONE CHILD, written by Christopher Martini and Brett Duncan,
tells the story of an 11-year old boy struggling for identity
as he is torn between the two worlds of his Mormon mother and
Native-American father.
After a painful divorce, Mathews world is fractured by the
resentments of a bitter father and a mother hiding behind a haze
of anti-depressants and denial. From household to household, but
never home, Mathew travels his world tirelessly seeking the acceptance
of others. Finally, desperate acts bring him face to face with
his own inner strengths, and with this discovery come the tools
to build a kind of home only before glimpsed in dreams. Out of
a world of despair, "The Stone Child" reconstructs the
most inspirational tale the greatest gift to hope and humanity
-- the development of a child.
The screenplay, by Martini and Duncan, was Short listed in 2002
and 2004 at the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program and was
awarded Quarter-Finalist at the Slamdance Script Competition.
Heres what Slamdance had to say:
"This film feels like the epitome of indie cinema. A very
original and poignant work."
THE STONE CHILD was recently awarded Quarter-Finalist at this
years Page International Screenwriting Awards.
Martini was initially sparked by the discovery of Native-American
lineage in his family and his mothers involvement in the
Native-American community, and this led him to the story which
later became THE STONE CHILD. Since the scripts inception,
Martini has been thrust on a very interesting personal journey
which led him to Pine Ridge Reservation where he formed many friendships
with the people there, as well as the sponsoring of a local youth,
Kestral Falcon Little, through the Circle of Children organization
led by Shivani Baker. Through sponsoring a child, endless research,
and helping out with the preparation of a buffalo and the participation
in Sundance ceremonies, Chris has opened his eyes to the cultural
foundation of the Lakota people. He is committed to illuminating
to a world in desperate need of story and healing, Native-American
culture.
