IN MEMORIUM..

In Memoriam

Barbara Rogers, good friend of Jimmy Lee Young, passed away suddenly at her home in Rosamond, California, last week. Barbara was originally from Illinois, and made her home in California. She was currently the head librarian at NASA, at Edwards, AFB. She was in attendance at the Native American Heritage luncheon on November 16th, and shared photos of her motorcycle trip to Kernville.

Nicknamed "boss" by Jimmy, Barbara was a kind soul, loved by many. She was instrumental in starting the 'featured artist' program at the Kern County Library in Rosamond, which Jimmy still performs for, in support of the reading programs held there. She had worked for many years in the corporate sector, before taking over as librarian at the Wanda Kirk Branch in Rosamond.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 16th, at 1:00 pm, at the Wayside Chapel in Rosamond, CA.

Jimmy Lee Young recieves double nomination at the LaMusicawards! Anduhyaun, the new single, is nominated for Single of The Year, and Jimmy Lee for Male Singer Songwriter of the Year, in the Americana category!.The song was recorded with drummer Gil Gabaldon II, and the following native artists: Three time Native American Music Award (NAMA) winner Felipe Rose of The Village People, NAMA 2005 Female Artist of The Year Yolanda Martinez, 2005 NAMA Best Country Album winner, Qua Ti Si, seven time NAMA nominee, native flautist Eddie Three Eagles. Lead guitarist Ricky Lewis also appears, playing lead guitar and bass!
-
The song is dedicated to Anduhyaun houses in Canada, which help battered homeless men, women and children, and help to preserve their Ojibwe culture.
-
"I am very grateful to the great spirit for these nominations, because they are bringing more awareness about the work of Anduhyaun, Inc., under the hand of Ms. Blanche Meawassige, their CEO. It is true that we have spoken and we are talking about coming to Canada in June. Also, I have agreed to be their national spokesperson. She has spoken about us doing national Indigineous People's Televesion and Radio. I am very happy to see this dream unfolding. Today, Anduhyaun is being talked about in Hollywood!".
-
After finishing a round of 6 shows in September, and another two this month, Jimmy is set to play live at Edwards Air Force base in November for Native American Heritage month.
-
"We have been REALLY busy these past 10 weeks. Gil and I have been in the studio doing the demos for the next CD which we will begin in late winter. The songs are written, and I think our fans will be pleased. We have been playing some of them live, and have gotten great reactions. I am also working on duets for Quatisi and Yolanda, and I am proud to announce that Quatisi's is almost finished recording, and I am still working on Yolanda's. They are strong tunes, and I am very excited to hear them with both of these ladies singing. They are so good on Anduhyaun, and are definitely at the top of the genre, along with Felipe Rose, who is a living legend, and Eddie Three Eagles who is amazing! Gil and Ricky also do an incredible job!"
-
This comes on the heels of news that the 8th Native American Music Awards will be televised nationally to over 80 million homes ( visit www.nammys.com <http://www.nammys.com> ). Jimmy, Quatisi and Yolanda all presented awards that night, and new JLY band bassist Cris Webb performed a tribute to his grandfather Link Wray, that ROCKED!!!
-
" I want to cement in the minds of all the readers that I am grateful also, to Daryl Dragon, my webmaster, and friend, who has helped Gil and I so much in bringing our music to the public, and continues to help us bring native music to the mainstream, and to the award shows that showcase our talent. Thank you!" Rock on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear friends,
-
Thank you for all your calls and letters! Already i have been asked if we are going to be coming to Milwaulkee for the Indian Summer festival, and the Indian summer Music Awards, and the answer is a big, "YES!!!" Organizers have requested that we play the Oneida stage ( one of the 2 big one's!), and to perform Anduhyaun onstage during the show.We will be on the Oneida stage fromon Sunday, Sept.10th, from 1:30-2:30. We are down to about 7 days for Anduhyaun to actually be in hand from the factory!!!

And...Somebody asked me to list the various projects I am working on, so here they are:
-
I am writing duets for both Yolanda Martinez and Quatisi for their upcoming CD's.. Also, Cris Webb, Link Wray's grandson asked if I wanted to sing on the Link Wray tribute CD, and sent me the material! I said yes, of course. I sang some blues at the Nammy's afterparty, and his mom likes my blues!
-
Cris Martini's movie starts shooting in October, and I am so jazzed to be working some of the promotion end through Native radio stations that have been asking for interviews! Nearly all of the actors he wanted have 'attached' to the project, including Graham Greene, and Delanna Studi was shooting some test scenes. Check it out online. Cris is using some of my songs in the film, and we will be performing in the film as well. I play a singer in a club, giving a spiritual message in the form of a song.
-
We are discussing the possibility touring Canada, thrrough the efforts of corporate sponsors. We shall have to cross our fingers and pray! Anduhyaun is getting rave reviews from the folks we tested it on, and I couldn't be happier!
-
Pony Records out of Switzerland has given me the nod on 2 gigs, and we are hoping to go there in the spring. One of the gigs will be at Castle Serravale, which holds, I believe a 500 seat indoor arena, in Dingio Switzerland!
-
You can now find us on www.garageband.com <http://www.garageband.com> .

Well, sorry to keep it short folks, but we are really working overtime, and I promise I will write as soon as something pops up!
-
Thank you all for logging onto this website which has now had over 7,000 visitors! YOU GUYS ROCK! And thank you for making this dream come true.
-
Peace in all things,

Dear friends,

Thank you for all of the emails regarding Anduhyaun's release. The CD is complete, and we are awaiting copies back from the factory. I am hoping this means that you would all line up in the snow to buy it and that it will fly from the shelves of CDbaby! I have listened to the tracks over and over, and I know you are gonna love this one! It really has gotten to the point where these songs are where traditional native music meets modern music, and they dance beautifully together! Everybody does such a great job, and I have included some remasters of songs from 'Maya' and 'Apache'. There are actually 8 tracks on this one, and with all of the new mastering technology invented by my good friend John Vestman ( www.johnvestmanmastering.com <http://www.johnvestmanmastering.com> ), I couldn't resist adding tracks to this 'single'. Eddie Three Eagles did such an incredible job on Anduhyaun, that we included a solo that is clear, pure, and beautiful.

So hang in there, lovers of native music, because countdown is in!

Jimmy Lee Young a hit with producers in New York!

Jimmy Lee Young and Gil Gabaldon II made quite a splash in New York City! Playing for a packed crowd above 5th Avenue, it was a magical night for the boys! They were accompanied by Chris Webb on bass. (Chris is the grandson of legendary performer Link Wray, and will be seen playing live at this year's Native American Music Awards, on June 8th, in a tribute to his legendary grandfather.) The event was a benefit concert for the film, " The Stone Child" , by Chris Martini. Chris, who by day produces for MTV, and had worked on such projects as T.V.'s, "Touched by an Angel",wrote, and will direct the movie.

He had this to say to Jimmy after the show:

Thanks Jimmy. You guys rocked that night. When you guys got up there the crowd shut up and moved forward
and I looked at you, and your voice went right through them, piercing their soul...and they needed it because they are a people in need of spirit. You wailed your songs and it touched them!

One exec from MTV said, " If I had a record company, I'd sign these guys!" Never one to miss an opportunity to do buisiness, Jimmy discussed the idea of a show highlighting Native talent from the Native American Music Community. " It feels great to be talking with people who are actually willing to listen to these ideas. I have always said that Native Music is a "genre of many genres". Its rock, pop, hip-hop, blues, folk, country, and of course, traditional. How can you miss with that kind of range."
-
Jimmy opened the set with the new single, "Anduhyaun". Carla and Rhys Longton, Jr., sister and nephew of Gil's, were in attendance. Carla had this to say: Those guys rocked! The room got REAL quiet, and all these people moved forward. I was in front, and suddenly there were all these people standing around me! It was unbelieveble! They were in the corner of the room in front of these huge windows at Blink Digital, and the sun was setting in beautiful colors, with 5th Avenue in the backround. It was pure magic!" Rhys Longton, Gil's nephew, was enjoying his first JLY concert, and was awed by the show." I LOVE "One Voice One Cry", from the 'Maya" CD, but live, that song was NUCLEAR!" At this Jimmy turned to Gil and said, " You see... we're NUCLEAR! If the kids think you're nuclear and the adults hear that you are spiritual, then you're not only doing something right, you're doing something highly unusual!"
-
The guys launched into , "Mother Earth, Father Sky", another new song slated for release later this year. It is a beautiful piece, which harkens to the image of Jimmy standing atop the Grand Canyon , arms stretched upward toward the the sky." I wrote that lyric spontaneously, except for the last bit. We'd had a great gig, and an awsome vibe going between Gil, myself and our new friend , flautist Chad Whetstone. He wanted me to write a song, and we just started playing this. I was so thankful for all that we had that weekend, that it just came out. I mean I closed my eyes, and out it came. Chad said it was meant to be. I think so, too."
-
Following with, "Apache", a crowd favorite, and closing with "One Voice One Cry", which won last year's Native American Music award 'Song/Single of the Year, the show was an incredible success with the audience. " Chris says that the show was a big success. We raised 6, 000 dollars in support of the film, and finally got to show off what we do, to the New York execs. I think they were surprised at the sound we have, and are calling it 'new'. What is new, I think, is that we are bringing a certain spirituality to popular music, native style!"
-
Jimmy had suggested to Chris that the characters in the film go to a club, where they happen upon a performer, who gives a spiritual message in a song- and guess who is the performer! After the show, Chris said to Jimmy, " That IS a scene in the film , and you're in it!"
-
The film is scheduled to begin shooting this summer. Currently, Jimmy and Gil are preparing for the release of, "Anduhyaun", which was pushed back due to last year's devastating hurricanes in the Gulf south, and the multiple evacuations of Jimmy's family. "It was horrible. My mother suffered a heart attack, and my niece was 3 months pregnant. She lost the baby. We were all just stunned for weeks after. Everything was just...gone. But even as we brace for another hurricane season, I have faith that we can put all of this behind us, and the Great Spirit, who preserved the lives of my family will take care of us.All through it my mother kept saying,' YOU keep working.' She is a firm believer in our music, and our various missions." Anduhyaun also features the talents of Gil gabaldon II, guitarist Ricky Lewis, 3 time Nammy winner Felipe Rose of the Village People, Female Artist of the Year, Yolanda Martinez, an amazing talent, Best Country Album winner Qua Ti Si, a beautiful songstress of Cree descent, and flautist Eddie Three Eagles.

Hey Guys!~ I am writing to correct a goof I made last letter, when I erroneously identified Ms. Bo Johnson of Native Nation (KRFC, Fort Collins, Colorado), as Bo Hopkins, the famous movie star! This possibly, Freudian slip does prove that in my spare time I have been watching too many movies. Bo Hopkins is not to my knowledge hosting any radio show or playing my CD. But Bo if your reading this I would be glad to send you a copy! Sorry Bo! And thank you for playing the CD.
Also, I want to take moment to thank Molly Cotton of the Skye Ute casino for her great letter, and we are sending you a copy of Rock City magazine with the article and photo. Thank you for everything Molly! You rock!
Peace,
Jimmy

The award show took place on Saturday night, September 10th, where the guys were nominated an unprecedented 4 times in the categories of, Alternative Rock, Classic Rock, Country and Pop Recording, a feat that has left industry insiders stunned! The guys were blown away themselves by the double victory, winning the Best Classic Rock recording for "Serenity" and "Skins", and Best Country recording, for "Rock and Roll Woman , and " Man In Love", all songs from the the latest CD, "Maya",which Jimmy describes as a "crossover Cd, reflecting many moods and grooves". "Maya" has truly 'crossed over" winning awards all over the country ( 4 total, to date, including the First American's In The Arts Awards' Outstanding Musical Achievement award in Los Angeles). It has also garnered a whopping 6 music award nominations! Jimmy dedicated the awards to the women of An Duhyaun, (which means "Our Home" in Ojibwe) the Toronto Ojibwe women's shelter of that same name, (the second oldest in Canada) and to the people and city of New Orleans, the place of his birth, and hometown." We will rise above the floodwaters and fly!", said Jimmy. "And I declare a new dawn for native music! May we take over the mainstream!", words that drew deafening cheers from the packed crowd! He also literally dragged Gil by the hand onto the stage for the second award, and asked the crowd if they would recognize Gil for his hard work, which drew THUNDEROUS applause from the crowd, for Gil. He also thanked, among others, Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille," for their dedication in helping them, and Native Music, albeit, in the shadows" -until now! The guys closed the show with a performance of 'Apache", and debuted 'Anduhyaun' for an encore!
-
Other nominees included friend and Native American Music Awards' Country Album of the Year Winner, Quatisi, who garnered 3 nominations! "Her voice is pure beauty", said Gil, who has been working on tracks for 'Anduhyaun' with her and Jimmy.
-
Interestingly, the great Martha Radbone won the pop category for her new CD, "Skintalk", which Jimmy says is, "slick, soulful and absolutely hot!" Fans will remember that Martha won the 2002 Native American Music Awards', "Best New Group" award, the first time Jimmy and Gil were nominated, in that category.
-
Today, Jimmy jokes: "Last year, when Martha and I were asked to present awards at the Nammys, we joked that the previous year, Martha won the award, and I went home and cried like a baby! The morning after the ISMA’s, I called her to tell her about her win, and to tell her the next time she wins an award I'm up for, I am marching out to New York, and kicking her butt!! She said, "What? You win TWO AWARDS and you're complaining?" We laughed REALLY hard! She is a great lady, and we share alot of laughs. I hope we get to work together some time, 'cause I really like her and her music, and I really dig her vibe. She and Quatisi have something in common: they really work hard, and are honest, good folks". Redbone is slated to appear in Los Angeles, at the Temple Bar, October 12th. ( visit: http://www.martharedbone.com )
-
After the show, the artists enjoyed a swinging afterparty, and fireworks display at the Indian Summer Festival, on the shores of Lake Michigan. "We signed A LOT of autographs!", said Jimmy. "I remember as a kid just wanting to meet my music heroes, and now I give my fans all the time they want. One of my great examples is Crystal Gayle, who is always polite and kind to her fans, and gives them her time. My mom recently said at the Nammys, that Miss Gayle and her sister, Peggy Sue are , 'Pure sweetness, and pure class.' They are truly good to their fans, and that's kind of star I hope to be one day."
-
That one day may be soon, as offers are coming in, based on the various awards Jimmy and Gil have won, and the availability at this site, of Jimmy's songs, to the record industry execs that can make it happen. For this kind of structure, Jimmy gives all credit to Daryl Dragon, and Toni Tennille.
-
"I want the native people to know how much these folks have done for us, and in turn for native music. Daryl showed us where to put our energies, if we were willing to work for it. They are such good people for doing this, and they have never accepted anything from me in return, except my undying gratitude. They have a rare generosity, an kind aura.
-
Currently, Jimmy and Gil are involved in efforts to raise money for the victims of hurricane Katrina, including a benefit concert in Encino, California on Spetember 18th. They have also tentatively agreed to open for Jackson Brown on November 6th. Both dates will be announced in detail at this site, shortly.

Hey Guys!
Well it was certainly a big week! First, I want to thank you all for the overwhelming support you guys have been pouring on us in regards to Hurricane Katrina. My mom especially sends her love, and gratitude for all the messages we've received, inquiring about my family's safety. She even remarked, " Wow, I didn't realize you were getting so famous!" I just found out that Edwards AFB is sending a contingent of troops, and civilians to the area, and you KNOW I am planning to go! If they won't send me, I still plan to go on my own.
Also, as you know, we are pre-releasing An Duhyaun, and it is available through this site, released September 5th. Just send a request via
the guestbook if you would like a copy. Copies are available for 10 dollars each, and will be on CDbaby in a few days.
Also, I will be performing at the Indian Summer Music Festival on Friday, September 9th. Also, we will be performing at the actual awards show, doing the closing number, and presenting awards as well!
At this time, I would also like to thank the many artists who have done so much to help in these various efforts, especially 3 time Nammy winner Felipe Rose of the Village people.
Felipe, as you know, is a 30 year veteran of the music industry, and has performed on stages around the world. He was so kind to lend his talents to the song, and will no doubt continue to set the world afire with his performances with the Village People. A true professional, Felipe has worked harder than any other Native American artist around, and is in my opinion a living legend. Thank you Felipe!
Well, I will be back with all the latest news from the JLY camp. Til then, please pray for my fellow New Orleaneans who have lost so much.
God bless you all,
Jimmy

Dear friends,|
Thank you for all of your calls and messages. At this time, New Orleans is in danger of further catastrophe, with still-rising waters. I am thanking the creator that all of my family members have called in to each other, and are evacuated and safe. Please say a prayer for the people of all of the towns and cities along the gulf coast that have lost everything. I received this and thought it would be a good idea to pass it along. I promise I will do everything I can for the people of my hometown of New Orleans. Please join me in helping the victims of hurricane Katrina. May the great spirit bless and protect you all.
In respect and gratitude,
Jimmy Lee Young

Hot news!!!
In an impromptu interview with Mr. Dan Smoke of Smoke Signals Radio, ( London/Ontario, Canada), I announced the recording of the summer release single, "Anduhyaun" in honor of the London/Ontario battered women's shelter of the same name. Mr. Smoke states that stage 1 is a 16 bed shelter, and stage 2 is a 6 story shelter with approximately 54 apartments. The project came about during a conversation between Mr. Smoke and myself last year. We were doing an interview, and Mr. Smoke mentioned the shelter to me. It struck me as a beautiful name, and a noble cause. The name means 'a new dawn', and it meant many things to me. We are experiencing a new dawn in native music, with many artists, and many styles, completely unique to each artist. I asked some of my fellow Native American Music Awards winners to join me on this project, including Felipe Rose of the Village People, Yolanda Martinez, ( this year's Best Female Artist), Quatisi ( this year's winner of Best Counrty Album), and flutist Eddie Three Eagles, who recently adopted Felipe Rose! It's an all star ensemble, that I hope will bring awareness to the hard work of the folks at the shelter, and give rays of hope to its occupants. Mr. Smoke has heard the song, and has already suggested entering it into the Aboriginal Music Awards in Canada, next year! Rock on!

The interview can be heard in its entirety, at www.aboriginalradio.com <http://www.aboriginalradio.com> , at 10am eastern standard time and 10pm eastern standard time, 7am and 7pm pacific time, on Tuesday, July 12th. Also, look for interviews with Yolanda, Quatisi, Felipe, and Eddie Three eagles, who Mr. Smoke will be scheduling very soon!
In the same interview, I gave a rave review to Martha Redbone for her new CD. In a bold artistic move, Martha has featured members of AIM ( American Indian Movement) on the CD, showing that she is both a fine artist, and a warrior. Rock on Martha! Also, I once again took the opportunity to extoll the works of Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille ( classic/current group The Captain and Tennille), and Daryl's brilliant on line concept, Surferzrule! (www.surferzrule.com)

In other news, the Indian Summer Festival Awards are scheduled to announce their nominees this Friday, July 15th.Previous winners include Martha Redbone, and the geat Derek Miller. Watch for nominations!!!
And, there will be a new address announced for JLY merchandise. Jimmy is working on updating the website, and all designs will be shown. At present, anyone interested in advanced orders can email Jimmy at the website.
And finally... congratulations to friend and fellow artist, Camille Nighthorse for her part in the new TNT series by Steven Spielberg, " Into The West". Tune in to catch her performance! Many of our friends including Graham Green, who we have had the honor to meet on many occasions, also star in the production.

And once again thank you all for our continued success. You have helped us to accomplish much, and we are forever greatful. I have included a message that I received from Mr. Smoke, that was very inspirational, and very helpful to me at this time. Until very soon,
Peace,
Jimmy Lee Young

A Spritual message to be shared with all - from Mr. Dan Smoke of Smoke Signals Radio, ( London/Ontario, Canada)

Hi Jimmy Here is a teaching I know that I would like to share with you: "Lakota Indian Story"

"My grandfather took me to the fish pond on the farm when I was about seven, and he told me to throw a stone into the water. He told me to watch the circles created by the stone. Then he asked me to think of myself as that stone person. "You may create lots of splashes in your life but the waves that come from those splashes will disturb the peace of all your fellow creatures," he said. "Remember that you are responsible for what you put in your circle and that circle will also touch many other circles. You will need to live in a way that allows the good that comes from your circle to send the peace of that goodness to others. The splash that comes from anger or jealousy will send those feelings to other circles. You are responsible for both." That was the first time I realized each person creates the inner peace or discord that flows out into the world. We cannot create world peace if we are riddled with inner conflict, hatred, doubt, or anger. We radiate the feelings and thoughts that we hold inside, whether we speak them or not. Whatever is splashing around inside of us is spilling out into the world, creating beauty or discord with all other circles of life.

Remember the eternal wisdom: WHATEVER YOU FOCUS ON EXPANDS..".

Victory!!!
Triumphant homecoming for Jimmy Lee Young and Gil Gabaldon II, as they win 7th Annual Native American Music Awards, www.nammys.com
"Song of The Year" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Hey Guys! Well, we did it!

As you might have heard, we won the "Song of The Year" award at this years Nammy's, for 'One Voice One Cry'! It was an incredible event, and in my opinion, the best Nammy's yet! The show gets better every year, thanks to the founders Ellen Bello, and Donald Kelly. Hats off guys, for all you hard work and efforts!
-
The event was, of course star studded! Our category was announced second. When they called my name I was just stunned. I stood up to thunderous applause, especially from the Native American Music 'Rat Pack', including Felipe Rose, (accompanied by Charles and his great assistant, and my personal buddy, Deb Crawford), Martha Redbone, Micki Free, Yolanda Martinez and others! Thank you guys for voting for me! I accepted my award, and after the press intervews, handed it off to my mom and Gil, who were the real favorites that night!
-
After the show I took her to meet the biggest names in Native music, and they were of course charmed by her, since everyone knows my mom is the nicest, coolest mom ever! I introduced her to country music/native music singing star Crystal Gayle and her charming sister Peggy Sue. You know, sometimes I just can't help myself - I told Miss Gayle that I loved her song, " Talking In Your Sleep", and started singing it from memory. She and Peggy Sue chimed right in, and they sounded as beautiful as falling water! That family is truly amazing! They had performed Peggy Sue's new song, a beautiful ballad whose daring theme points to the many broken treaties the Native American Indian has had to endure over the centuries. It is really deep.We took many photos, and I will tell you that these ladies have all the beauty, class, and patience of true royalty! My mom gave them both rave reviews for their grace. Actually, she raved to my sister Nancy that they were," Beautiful, well bred, gracious ladies, with impeccable manners. Made of pure sweetness!" At one point I lost mom in the rush, and Miss Gayle actually searched high and low for her with me. I tell you we ALL gave these ladies an A+ for their talent, patience and grace.
-
The young talented flutist Evren Ozan walked up and gave me a free CD which I have listened to and REALLY dig. You must check it out. That kid could be a BIG star some day! I was greeted by Qua Ti Si, Devara Thunderbeat, Jim Boyd, and Chante Ishta and K Takeda of WNMF radio show, Two Worlds, Tampa. Kansas K. Begaye is as beautiful and friendly as ever, and though many of these encounters were a brief introduction - a hello, a smile and a handshake, these folks are truly down to earth, friendly people.
-
When we entered the after-party, Felipe Rose, whose great name precedes him, called out to us to enter the 'winners circle'! Gil and I walked over to what looked like a scene from Studio 54 in the 70's! I couldn't believe the talent that was before my eyes! I made a beeline for the guys clutching my Nammy! Gil and I were given a warm welcome by Felipe, Micki Free, the beautiful and EXTREMELY talented Martha Redbone, Adam Beech, and his very lovely, and fun loving wife Tara Mason. Felipe gave us a BIG bear hug and quipped, "Welcome to the Native American Music 'Rat Pack'!" Gil and I took turns dancing with the many gorgeous women present at the party, and I was so excited, that I danced with my Nammy all night. Felipe coined it the "Nammy Spank" and required me to perform it for Micki, Martha and others!
- For future Nammy winners hoping to join the 'Rat Pack', look out! You may have to perform it at aftershows for many Nammy's to come, for your initiation! Martha and Tara actually danced everybody's feet off, and Tara had everybody in stitches with her imitation of 'Friend's' Joey. (How YOU doin'?! ) Adam and Tara are two of the coolest people in the world! Yolanda Martinez, winner of this year's Best Female Artist (and her beautiful daughter, also Yolanda), hugged me and said she voted for me! Right on, Yo! She also said we should do a song together! Most definitely!!! Her daughter hugged me and said, "Hey, I recognized you from your CD cover. We LOVE your CD!" Thank you Yolanda! Both of you!
-
The beautiful Rita Coolidge was standing to one side chatting with the last year's Nammy winner Derek Miller. (Derek won last year for his recording of, "Music Is My Medicine".) I introduced her to my producer friend Dennis Dragon, (www.dennisdragon.com) and took some photos. She is more beautiful than ever! K.C. of K.C. and the Sunshine Band fame entered the scene, and is one of the nicest guys around. He really smiled when I told him I learned to dance as a kid, dancing to " Boogie Shoes", and ' That's The Way". ( Have I ever mentioned that I was obsessed with music as a kid?) Even former members of Cher's band were there. WOW! Founder Ellen Bello entered the scene, and was the joy of the party. Donald Kelly, co-founder, was as always jovial, and and a million laughs. I don't know how they do it! First this unbelievable awards program and, then this GREAT bash! She and Donald threw THE PARTY of the year! Bar none! They definitely rock!
-
At the end, and believe me NOBODY wanted to go home, I bumped into Crystal Gayle again, and she actually endured more photos with me, this time with the talented native artist JANA. Nothing will send a guy's pulse racing like standing between these two beauties. Jana's manager STEFAN GALFAS was there, and he and DENNIS DRAGON swapped war stories. Both have incredible recording histories, and you should look them up online sometime. All of the photos will be posted in a few days.
-
So there it is guys! It really happened that way, and more! And YOU made it happen. We can't thank you enough. We are looking forward to playing the casinos, and with wider airplay who knows?
-
Now I have raved on about the night that we will never forget, but there's a couple of things I would like you guys to take note of.
-
1. BIG and I mean BIG, BIG thanks to Daryl Dragon and his great wife Toni Tennille. These people are generous with their time, and kindness towards this artist. They believed in us, and are seeing this dream to fruition. They rock!
2. Gil and I are very grateful to all the people who have helped us in the past, and cast their vote for us. You are very important to us! And may the great spirit bless you always, and keep you in his light. All of you!
3.The music industry is changing, as if you didn't notice! Many people are confused at this new age of digital downloads, blending genres, etc. DARYL DRAGON HAS SOME REAL ANSWERS IN THE FORM OF WWW.SURFERZRULE.COM <http://www.SURFERZRULE.COM> . IT IS THE NEXT LOGICAL STEP IN THE EVOLUTION OF THIS BUISINESS. LOG ON AND READ IT - A FEW TIMES TILL IT SINKS IN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. I STAKE MY NAME ON IT. I REPRESENT IT, AND I WILL KEEP SCREAMING ABOUT IT TILL EVERYONE THAT HAS HEARD MY SONGS HEARS ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-
SONG OF THE YEAR- WOW !

The nominations have just been released, and Jimmy and the guys are nominated in the following categories: Best Male Artist, and Song/Single of the Year, for " One Voice One Cry"!

-
" I am so blown away!", says Jimmy. "I was still floating on air about performing on T.V.'s, " Cafe Soul", when I got the news. It feels great to be nominated along with such big names as R. Carlos Nakai, and Felipe Rose of the Village People. I understand Rita Coolidge is involved again this year, as well as Jennifer Warnes, and John Densmore, of The Doors! I can't wait!" Drummer/percussionist Gil Gabaldon II was equally amazed. " I'm still in shock! These awards are packed with talented artists, and it is so awesome to have our music recognized by them. Jimmy is a natural born singer/songwriter. He is ALWAYS singing, and writing new songs. He has already written the 3rd CD, and its great to see him recognized as one of the Top 5 Male Artists in the country, by the NAMA." Adds Jimmy:" Gil has worked every year that I have on our projects, and is as loyal a friend as he is a musician. All thanks to him and to the friends, family, and especially the fans who support our music, and especially to Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille."

Breaking news!!!!!!!!!
Jimmy lee Young's singing television debut!!!
-
Jimmy Lee Young was tapped as a last minute replacement to appear on L.A.'s own " Cafe Soul"! Jimmy did an acoustic set featuring 4 songs! Shortened versions of "One Voice One Cry", Man In Love", "Apache", and "Idyllwild" were performed by Jimmy. "It was great! The producer went to the website and heard the new tunes. His name is King James, and he said, " It blew me away!" I was supposed to do only one song, but when I got there, he had me do 4 songs! I had to shorten them on the spot, so it was sort of a challenge to just cut them on the spot, but it was great fun. They did a short interview, and I got to talk about the nammy's, and Surferzrule! At the end of the show, they had me stretch out "Idyllwild" for the credits! What a blast!
-
The show runs on L.A.'s Adelphia cable, (http://www.adelphia.com/) and is the last show of this season. Jimmy has tentatively agreed to return next season. Air dates and times will be announced here. Rock on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

08/16/2004

Dear fans,

Hey guys! Well after a much needed hiatus, I am rested, rejuvenated, and am getting ready to announce the fall gigs. We are calling the first leg, " The Art and Literacy Tour." These are the acoustic gigs that I do to promote reading programs on and off the reservations. After spending so much time in one studio or another, I am so glad to be hitting the road! I will announce these gigs next week. Hope to see you there!

Once again I will be joined by my friend Gil Gabaldon II, on drums and percussion, and Carl Rabun on backing vocals. After that, we will swell to a larger full band to be announced later. But here's the BIG news of the day...

I just spoke with famous keyboardist John Locke, (from that great 60's group, "SPIRIT". I also spoke with guitarist Ricky Lewis, who was country music's, 'Instrumentalist of the Year'. I then spoke with drummer Moyer Smith, who if you remember, toured opening for Matchbox 20 about a year ago. All of these guys played on the current JLY CD, "MAYA". We are convening later this month in a studio south of L.A. to shoot some live video!!! What a cast! As we push forward, I am constantly amazed by the surprising happenings around here! Rock and Roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And... Thank you all for being so patient about waiting for you copies of, "Maya". By next week, we should have more copies available at CD baby, etc. If you want us to hold a copy for you here at our office, please write to the guestbook, or email me, and I will see to it personally. I have to admit that we didn't expect such an overwhelming response, and didn't realize we would need to order so many CD's! Honestly, I appreciate the warm reception to the project, and needless to say, you make us very proud. Thank you all for making this dream a reality.

Well, my break is officially over, and you will be hearing from me alot more often! If you haven't heard the new CD, just log onto www.cdbaby.com <http://www.cdbaby.com> , and look up Jimmy Lee Young, and the CD is called... well you know!

Take care, rock on, and peace in all things.

Surferzrule !

Jimmy

Dear fans,

Hey guys! Thank you all for being so patient over the last few weeks. We have finally gotten things close to normal around here, and I have some updates for you all.
-
I want to thank you guys who bought out the CD at www.cdbaby.com <http://www.cdbaby.com> . We are waiting for the new copies to arrive, and they should be here any day now. I am currently working the schedule for late summer/fall gigs. I have been talking to several venues, and they seem really interested. Among them is the New Orleans Jazz and heritage festival! Wouldn't that be great! We have also been tapped by some of the venues here in Southern California. The goal here is to raise awareness for the various programs out there, to help raise literacy on and off the reservations. We will begin with some local gigs, and then branch out. All is still in the planning stages, so please stay tuned.
-
Also upcoming, as you might know, are the various Native Award activities. I have already spoken with Ronnett Crafton, and we are definitely participating in this year's Nammy's. Let's keep our fingers crossed for " Maya", and maybe we will see another nomination this year.
-
I have been in communication with various folks in the industry, and the CD is getting a very positive response. Who knows... maybe someone will take the bite and get us out there in earnest.Any takers?
-
Reminder: The Nammy's now have streamed video of last year's show. If you remember, I presented awards with Martha Redbone at the top of the show. Anyone interested can log onto www.nammys.com <http://www.nammys.com> , and check it out for a nominal fee.
-
Well, gotta get back to work! Rock on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

02/27/2004

Hey guys:
Well, I can't believe February is almost gone, and we are only 2 sessions away from wrapping up this great new CD!!! You won't believe the new harder sound! It is a dream come true for me, as I have had some of these songs demoed out earlier this year, and was itching to record them. The new sound is harder, sleaker, and full of new ideas! Believe it or not, among others, producer/Grammywinner/legend Denny Dragon (Denny's Website here) actually plays a little percussion on this CD, and I am joined also by players, Moyer Smith along with Gil Gabaldon II on drums, and the incredible Ricky Lewis on Lead guitar, plus Vic Grady on bass! And here's the capper: We have secured the servises of John Locke, keyboardist for the legendary 60's group "Spirit"!!!!! There is an amazing vibe going on here, as I have been approached to do the lead vocals on a re-make of a Spirit hit," Nature's Way", also to be produced by Denny Dragon!!!! I think you will all be pleased! Coincidentally, I just caught the movie " Auto Focus" starring Greg Kinnear, about the life of Hogan's Hero actor Bob Crane, and was surprised to hear a snippet of Spirit's, "I Got A line On You"! The 'spirits' are churning for this legendary group!!!
-
As you can imagine, I have not had a chance to stop and catch my breath since the Nammy's back in November! Speaking of which, let me reminisce for a little bit...
-
I was on the phone the other day with none other than that fantastic native soul singer Martha Redbone, and she said she can't wait to hear the new material. What a compliment from such a fantastic artist. She is one of those personable people who don't carry around a big ego. She is sweet, a great conversationalist, and a laugh a minute!!! I promised her friend Mary (a very nice lady with a real touch of class) a CD awhile ago, and have finally gotten around to mailing them out. This work/recording schedule has been a bit gruelling, but as you all know, it's what I hunger for!
-
Also, in case I haven't mentioned this, I got a chance to catch up with Blackfire at the Nammy's! I happened to mention that I was a Cass Elliot FREAK, and 'momager' Berta Benally mentioned that she and Cass used to be friends back in the day! She actually spoke Mugwump to me, and told me some cool stories about her and Cass's exploits! Of course I was glued to her all evening, and the lovely Jeneda and I sang our own rendition of "California Dreamin' ", at the dinner table! It was a riot. I also caught up with my pals Felipe Rose of the Village People, and the lovely Deb Crawford. It seems everybody was there that night. I came back to begin recording the VERY NEXT WEEKEND!!! One of the highlights of that evening was meeting John Densmore of - you guessed it, The Doors! WHAT A NIGHT!
-
New news: I will be attending the First Americans In The Arts Awards in Los Angeles on March 20th. And if you haven't got your tickets yet, better get them while they're hot. I spoke with Shawna Clay, a savvy, hard working member of the board the other day, and we worked out a little scheme. I will be assisting at the show that night, and I will be doing a song or two at the after party!!! I can't wait. I just heard from Tara Beech, Adam " Windtalkers" Beech's wife, and she asked if we were going to be there. I guess it's a thumbs up, Tara! Hope to see you guys there!
- - - - - - -

Well folks, the time has come for great change. For me it means that I will be saying goodbye to all things Crystal -Phoenix! If you all remember, we found out that another group, out of Italy, has had that name for awhile, since the 70's I think, and we had to give it up. The new address for any info can be found at www.jimmyleeyoung.com <http://www.jimmyleeyoung.com> . Onward into the future!!!
-
Speaking of futures: I also had to give up the services of many of my backup musician's as well. The lovely Amanda Guthrie has moved out of state to take a high position in radio in Oklahoma, with Clearchannel Radio, and is concentrating on her new career. Lead guitarist Dave Chalela has been transferred to Boston, and will be concentrating on his career as an Air Force attorney. (This really bums me out, 'cuz it was so nice to have an attorney in the family!!! Just kidding Dave.) I will be keeping in close touch with both of these guys, and wishing them well in the future. Backup singer Carl Rabun remains with me, and is pursuing a higher education, as well as my longtime partner in crime, drummer and executive producer Gil Gabaldon II. As I embark on my solo career, I look back and see so many happy times, and I look forward to many more. Good luck guys - I love you!!!
-
About the site: Check out the new (now active) guestbook that webmeister Daryl Dragon has cooked up! Daryl, the captain half of The Captain and Tennille, is our esteemed webmeister, and continues to oversee this artist's career with a watchful eye! Thank you sensei! And speaking of which, you can catch Daryl and Toni all over the place lately! Did you guys catch the Kohl's ad over the holidays featuring the music of these two legends? Catch their tunes frequently on the hit show, 'That 70's Show', and on VH1's Classic 70's. Check it out!
-
Well guys, thank you for making this site so popular. I can't believe how quick the visitor count changes, and it warms my heart to see the numbers go up. So keep the letters coming!
-
And remember, the release date for the new CD, March 20th, approaches!!! Only 3 recording days left!
-
Peace to you all, and thank you once again!
-
Rock On!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-
Jimmy

01/21/2004

Dear Friends,

Hey there!

I haven't had much chance to write lately as we have been recording our new CD!!! The great Dennis Dragon (the brother of our sensei and mentor Daryl Dragon of Captain and Tennille) is producing it, and I couldn't be more excited!

We are at this GREAT studio in Ojai, Ca., and the sounds are really coming together. Dennis has an incredible talent, and is taking us into all sorts of interesting directions! We have really gotten a chunk done, and Gil and I are jumping out of our skins!!! I hope you enjoy this project as much as the first!

Thanks for being so patient!!! You guys have done so much to encourage us, and we will always be thankful for that support! Please drop me a line at this address or at the website. Speaking of which, as you probably know, we discovered that another band has the rights to the name "crystal-phoenix". The new website address will be www.jimmyleeyoung.com ,but you can still log on at the old address, www.crystal-phoenix.com . I'll write and let y'all know when it officially changes.

Peace to all,

Jimmy
P.S. Gil says, "Hi!", and he hopes to hear from you guys sometime!

Peace!

SEGMENT ONE:
Soooo much is going on that i will definitely have to write this in two segments. First of all, I want to thank Ellen and Donald over at the Nammy's for inviting me to be a part of their show. I heard that the Nammy's are being broadcast by A&E, and PBS was also there that night. Martha Redbone and I presented together, and she was just great! We did a little improv, and got about a full minute of air time. If you guys see the show, look for us at the very beginning. Also, congrats to all the nominees and winners. See you next time!
-
For all interested, I caught up with my friends from Blackfire, one of the best punk bands to walk the Earth, and I found out that Berta, their "momager", used to be a close friend of the legendary Cass Elliott. Anybody that knows me knows how I feel about Cass's voice. Of course, Jeneda and I launched into our version of California Dreamin', and Berta and I had a long talk about Cass and the old days in Greenwich Village. WOW!
-
I also had the great honor of being introduced to none other than, John Densmore of The Doors. John was a great guy, and I finally got to thank The Doors for all that great music I was exposed to at a VERY early age. What an honor!
-
I got to spend a little time with alot of different artists at the Nammy's, including the great Micki Free, and the legendary Felipe Rose of the Village People. It felt so good to mingle with such a great group of talented folks. I can't wait till next year's Nammy's.
-
I want to take a moment to thank all of the business people I met that night, who were so gracious to me, and interested in my tunes. Thank you guys, and I hope you enjoy the streaming audio section of the site! I WILL be in touch, and make sure you all get your promo CD's and photo!
-
SEGMENT TWO:
Well, I guess the biggest news is that we have begun recording with Dennis Dragon, the brother of our esteemed webmeister! If you remember, Dennis, Daryl and Toni were awarded Grammys for "Love Will Keep Us Together", a song that rings true to this day. (Have you guys noticed how many C&T songs are being used throughout the media today!). Dennis is full of great ideas for the songs, and we are all so up about this project. The songs are very strong, and we are looking forward to expanding airplay! I will write more in depth about the project as it develops!
-
Right now, Gil and I are auditioning for the new backup band lineup, and things are very busy. We are hoping to make all the deadlines we've set for the recording, an then it's going to be a much busier year as far as gigging and personal appearances. So, til then, be well, and ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Peace,
-
Jimmy Lee Young

07/07/2003heyguys

Hey guys!
Well, things have been really cooking around here! We just got back from a GREAT gig in Colorado! The Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio rocks, and KCEL Radio did a GREAT job! I couldn't believe the buzz! I got there Friday the 13th (!) to find we were in literally every local paper. Everywhere we went, folks seemed to recognize us from the ads and posters, and it felt great to be where we had developed a strong following. I got a chance to make the rounds and speak with the librarian at the local library in Ignacio. I was so pleased to walk up and see a huge sign at the front door that said - "Summer Reading Program!" Way to go, Ignacio!!!
-
But I gotta tell you- it feels so gratifying that folks are willing to fly us out ( EVERYTHING INCLUDED!), and give us the star treatment, just to hear us play for an hour and a half! WOW!!! Things have really changed in the last year and a half! AHHH, the sweet smell of success!!! Thanks a million to Andrea Enriquez, KCEL Radio stations, and all the others, who are keeping us working and making our careers happen! This is great!!!!!!
-
Also... We are in the last of the planning stages for the new CD which we will be recording very soon. We are so up about this project, because it is taking us to a higher level. Most of you have heard some of the new songs, and some of them have been a well-kept secret! I have been writing tunes non-stop it seems, and in my quest to stay ahead, I have TONS of material!
-
In other news, the songs for the various movie projects are done and ready for mastering! I got right to it after the Colorado gig, and it was really hectic (as usual)! As you know Mr. Ray Tracy is doing a native- themed film this fall, and I am submitting 2 songs for that project: "Night on Fire", an incredible love song which I have been saving for just such an occasion, and a brand new tune called "With Love", that makes me teary-eyed! Also, Mr. Mackay Danes will be doing a film about Joan of Arc with Mira Sorvino and Albert Finney, and I am hoping he will dig the tune I have geared for that one. It is really a beautiful piece, featuring the new kid in town, keyboardist Greg Voss, who joined us recently. Greg does a fantastic job on the keys, and did an unbelievable job on all the movie tunes. I have also been doing some writing with our guitarist Dave Chalala, and I have to say that I am finally feeling the meat of the new direction that these songs are taking us in. I have been waiting for a talent such as his for a long time, and it has become apparent from the writing/ jam sessions, and the LIVE performances, that we have truly bonded and are mixing our distinctive styles to create new sounds! I wish you could have all seen us in Ignacio! I am really digging this! Over the last few months we have both watched each other grow, and I really feel that the chemistry of these songs has sent us into space! It's just incredible what you can do when you mix two very different styles, and come up with a new brew!!! And it's great that he's really become a pal, willing to work through just about anything, with no egos, just fine art! It's challenging to do this type of work, but we are climbing hills at an incredible rate, and I would not trade off what we have developed for all the world! If you liked the first CD than I know you will REALLY dig this upcoming one. Everything is really coming together, and I am so proud of all the band members, who have been the consummate professionals all this time. Thank you, Amanda, Carl, Dave, Greg, our pal Vic, and especially Gil, who is as always, that blue calm sea we rely on to balance my raging storm! You guys all rocked in Colorado, and continue to do so.
-
Now I am going to bait you all once more. Mind you this is still in the final planning stages, but the whisper around the camp here, is that a Very special producer will be working on this project, and we will be joined by a legendary musician/artist on this CD as well. Any guesses?
-
Last thing: In Daryl's pursuit to save this crumbling industry, he has come up with a concept you have heard me preach about every chance I get behind my mike! You guessed it -Surferzrule! Visit the site linked to this one, and pass the word!!! SURFERZRULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Well, I could think of a million more details to give you, but it's the music that matters most, and that is calling me to rehearsal- gee it must be Sunday! Rock On!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peace,
Jimmy

Dear fans,
-
Hey guys! Okay I waited for this till I had all the details, but here it is. I said I would be working with a VERY big star on his new CD due out later this year, remember? Well, it's Felipe Rose of the Village People!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had been speaking to Felipe about contributing to his new project, and I have sent him the songs that I demoed out. I can't tell you how exciting it is to be contributing to his project!!!!!!! Last year, Felipe gave a performance at the Native American Music Awards that made my jaw drop! His song TRAIL OF TEARS won, of course. He sent me a copy, and it's just great! I had met him at the hotel the night before, and he was so nice - really down to earth. I was not in the least surprised that he won! Meeting him was so cool! He actually took the time to sign autographs for my mom, my sister Nancy, and myself and Gil!!! I was backstage taking pictures with Camille Nighthorse and Crystal Gayle, and Jana, and I tell you I will never forget that night. I also met the sweet and wonderful Debra Crawford, who has helped me get it together in a big way lately.(Deb, you RULE!!!!!) Recently, I sent him some of the best material I had been working on, and I guess his CD is scheduled for release later this year. ROCK ON FELIPE!!!!!
-
In other news; I have been a REALLY busy dude these days. I went in and demoed out some of the songs for the new Jimmy Lee Young CD, and am pleased at the public reaction to them. As you might know, I live to write, and write to live! Also, I got a call from Andrea Enriquez of KSUT radio, in Colorado. Apparently, the CD has been knocking them dead out there, which led to this great gig we have this weekend, sponsored by them and the Sky Ute Casino. Rock and Roll!!! I have been doing some PSA's (public service announcements) for various stations, and am pleased that they thought enough of us to ask me to do it.

Last thing: Hey guys, please remember that our causes are: to help AA support on and off the reservations, and reading programs for kids. Here's how you can help- encourage your library to donate rooms for the meetings, and give a little time to AA. Also, kick in a few bucks to your local library's summer reading programs.it doesn't take much money, and if we all give just 5 dollars, it's a done deal. It gives kids a place to go in summer, and helps broaden their horizons. AND...

Hey guys!
-
Well, I guess it's time to take the pen in hand again ( or should I say, the fingers to the keys?). So much is going on that I guess I'll just jump in .
-
First of all a whopping thanks to Mr. Daryl Dragon (as you know, the Captain half of The Captain and Tennille, and our esteemed webmeister!) I guess you've noticed that the website has been re-designed to accomodate changes, and I can say that Daryl spent hours on this. Special thanks to the lovely and talented Toni Tennille, for her patience and understanding. You guys rule!
-
Well, we had a GREAT gig last night at the International Family Film Festival. Three of us played an accoustic set: myself, Gil on Bongos, and Amanda Guthrie, my beautiful backup singer, who was featured in the film, " The Visit", which also featured the song "Guardian Angel". It was great! Besides the simplicity of an accoustic show, the theater had a GREAT sound! We made alot of new friends, and saw some aquaintances as well! It looks like a few new directors have the CD in hand now, and I'm hoping the phone will be ringing ever more now that that's done! It was great that after the movies were shown, they came and asked for the promo Cd's we had, because they liked the song! Special thanks to Bonnie and Patty for all that promo! I love the movies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Also, I baited you guys with news that I will be working on my first national release for a well known artist. Well, we have a handshake agreement, and I'm waiting just a few days more to give you the scoop! You are really gonna dig this! Thank you guys for believing in us all these years, and for doing all you did for us on the way. We will always remember you! I'll write again soon , so stay tuned! Rock On!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hot news!!!

Jimmy Lee Young, formerly Crystal-Phoenix will be performing at the International Family Film Festival, in Valencia, California, on Sunday, April 27th!!! Jimmy has agreed to a license for the use of his song, " Guardian Angel" in the film, "The Visit", which will be featured in this festival, and others, including the Cannes Film Festival later this year!!! Coincidentally, Jimmy's backup singer Amanda Guthrie is starring in the film. Apparently, their ambition is to conquer the entertainment industry by being everywhere at once!" Amanda Guthrie joked," You mean I get to sing at this venue with this great rock and roll band, and THEN I get to see a movie that I'm in?" Said Jimmy," Hmmm... Things certainly are looking good these days!"
-
Having been elevated to playing shows with some of the best in Native American music, including Micki Free, the guys are more thrilled than ever! Says Jimmy," I was talking to Micki after his GREAT set, and we hugged and promised to keep in touch. He said he was going to Colorado in June. I asked if it was the Native American Music Festival, June 14th, and he said, 'Yes'! He was floored when I told him that I had organized that show as well as the one at Paladino's! Looks like we may be seeing alot of Micki in the future!" More details on the film festival, including venue, show times, etc., to follow. Rock On!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi fans:
Crystal-phoenix, featuring Jimmy Lee Young performed an intimate concert at the Wanda Kirk Branch Library last night. The band received a special letter of appreciation from the library, for breathing life into the Summer Reading program, and or performing. In attendance was the editor for the Rosamond Tribune who snapped photos with the guys, and clapped louder than anyone! She is in contact with the band and will run a full story for the May issue!!! Keep your eyes peeled!
-
Tomorrow night is the BIG gig with Micki. I still can't get over the fact that I'm booking with the biggest names in Native American Music. I will never forget that day Daryl Dragon (aka 'the captain') wrote and told me to go to all the Native Sites I could find. That same day I found the Nammy's. Thank you Daryl, yet again.

Dear CP fans; ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!
-
There is so much happening on the CP front, that I don't know where to begin. I usually try and write only when I have some juicy news for all of our friends and fans out there, and this is juicy!!!!
-
First of all, we have 4, count them - - 4 movie offers on the table! We have just signed a deal to license 3 of the songs from the Crystal-Phoenix CD " APACHE". Day of Redemption, starring Jeff Fahey, ( of Stephen King's, " The Lawnmower Man" and others) has offered us a deal in return for featuring, "APACHE", "GUARDIAN ANGEL" and "I COME TO YOU", in the film!!! We must have been on some kind of roll, because , thanks to Ms. Cam Knighthorse, director Ray Tracy has also offered to use some of the love songs I coincidentally had begun laying down in the studio.Nothing definite yet, mind you, but I have a feeling that he is really going to dig what I'm working on. They are really beautiful, and ethereal. I went in to do them as a side project to fill up some free time with something fun,. What could be more fun than recording songs? How about having a director offering to consider them for his picture? WOW!
-
I am also licensing " GUARDIAN ANGEL" to another film that is slated to go to film festivals across the country, and to CANNES!!! Coincidentally, the film features the beautiful Amanda Guthrie, who sings backup for us. Two other offers are in the works. Two down, two to go!!!!
-
As you know, we continue to carve a path through the vast jungle of the music biz! We are opening for the incredible Mr. Micki free at Paladino's on the 12th of April. If you remember, that's the same venue where we opened for rock sensation Kip Winger, and smashed club records when the crowd hollered for 3 ( count 'em), 3 encores!!! I can't wait to go back! Those folks are the rockingest on earth! I hope you will all be at this show as we have some great Native American Talent on the bill.Opening the show is Ms. Heather G, known for her great work with the classic Gladys Knight. Following will be "DAWA", whose group includes former members of the popular native group,"CLANDESTINE", Chuck Harris and Frank Poocha. Crystal-Phoenix will follow, and then Micki Free will take the stage. I got a chance to see him in action at the Nammy awards, and I tell ya' if you see him you will love him.
He is SUCH a great guitarist and all around performer. We will be doing a benefit for the kids summer reading program at Wanda Kirk branch Library on April 10th, in Rosamond,Ca.. If you want to see a good show- for FREE, come to the library and enjoy the poetry society's presentation of local poets (bring your own poem), and hear a full set performed by yours truly.
-
A BAND NAME CHANGE?
This part is tough. As some of you well know, we have been struggling with the fact that the actual name Crystal-Phoenix, unbeknownst to us, has been taken for some time by a band in Italy. Just when we thought it was safe in the water! So... as we are being played in Europe, we have had to consider dropping the name. Don't freak! We have decided that the band will soon be billed as The Jimmy Lee Young band. Posters will read " Jimmy Lee Young" as well as movie credits, etc. Anyway, what's in a name, right? The most important thing is that the band is of one mind, one goal and one heart. And we are excited that the new songs are as good or better than anything we've done so far, we are anxious to get our new project underway, and move ahead with tours, shows and films! Personally, I can think of nothing else, and these guys are the best in the world for going through all of these times TOGETHER! So , even though we will have a new name, ( a name our fans recognise already) we will still be dedicated to bringing our fans and friends the beautiful sounds we always have.
-
Last thing: I'm holding out on you guys, because I haven't actually finalized a couple of REALLY exciting deals. But in the next few days, I will let you in on some UNBELIEVABLE news! I mean REALLY UNBELIEVABLE!!! But for now, I gotta keep it under wraps. Check back in a few days for the details. Hint: It involves a very famous person, and a VERY famous group. Hmmmmm...........
-

Peace and love to you all. And please remember. As strange as it sounds, peace is something you sometimes have to fight to protect. Please pray for the MANY friends I have in the military overseas. I'm genuinely concerned for them, and want them to come home safely. Please keep them in your prayers. And remember also, that there is NO hate stronger than love. I love you all, and thank you for believing in us, and for sticking by us all these years. You make us feel like stars!
-
God bless you once again, and we'll see you at the shows as always!
-
Peace and Love, Jimmy
ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Dear CP fans,
Hey guys! Well things are really cooking for Crystal-Phoenix these weeks. First of all we will be opening for superstar Micki Free at Paladino's in Tarzana, California on April 12th!!!!! We are kicking off quite a Native American Music movement around the L.A. area with our crossover /native sound! We are planning 2 video shoots, one at the Paladino's show, and one for a Pow-Wow in the Grand Canyon, where, coincidentally, we shot the CD cover! And, the club is planning to bring in even more big names in Native Music with yours truly as opening act! Both Buffy St. Marie, and Janice Marie are being considered. I spoke with Deb Crawford from Felipe Rose's camp( Felipe as you know, is a long time member of the Village People!) and she seemed optimistic!!! It would be great if we could get Felipe!

We went to the First Americans In The Arts Awards at the Beverly Hilton last week, in Beverly Hills,,and EVERYBODY was there, and we met and spoke with them all! I saw and spoke with Micki Free, and he's doing GREAT! Read all about it at www.crystal-phoenix.com/news - just below.... He says he's going on tour with Shalamar later this summer. Wow!!!

Also, we are tentatively set to play the LARGEST Pow-Wow in the country, in New Mexico, April 24-26, at the Gathering Of Nations! We will be appearing at the Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio, Colorado on June 14th, for the Native Music Festival sponsored by the casino and KSUT Radio. I hear from Andrea Enriquez, the program director, that the CD is STILL doing great, played daily on their family of 8 radio stations in the area!!! I will also be doing a LIVE radio performance, and going around to do my fundraisers for reading programs, and seeing what I can do to get some support for the local AA meetings. These are 2 issues that I think affect us all, and I feel really strongly about them. This April 8th we are being given a special award from the Kern County, California Library System for our efforts! We are so honored! We will be giving a FREE CONCERT at the Wanda Kirk Branch Library on April 8th, as a benefit/fundraiser for the library. The date is tentative. If you're in the area, drop by and give a few pennies to the kids reading program! We are all very excited about this show, and about this music being used to bring good to the hood!!!

We may be playing the Choctaw Nation Music festival July 14th. It's an outdoor venue that seats 4,000!!! It's not definite yet, but I will keep the website updated, so stay tuned.

If you remember the movies, " Windtalkers", " Dance Me Outside" and " Smoke Signals", then you know native actor Adam Beach. I spoke with Adam and his lovely girlfriend at the awards show the other night, and I suggested that since I'll be in their hometown in Canada doing the Dan Smoke Radio Show, that they be my special guests for that show. Wouldn't that be cool?

But.. here's the big news - A MOVIE SOUNDTRACK OFFER ! ! ! ! ! !
It looks like I have been tapped to work on on a couple of movie projects. One is with Mr. Ray Tracy and director McKay Daines. Mr. Daines is also directing a film about Joan Of Arc later this year. Also, director Tony Christopher has approached us about using 3 songs from the Apache CD for his film entitled, Day of Redemption, starring actor Jeff Fahey.WOW!!! ( Special thanks to Camille Nighthorse, who apparently has been playing the CD for everyone in the world! Thank you Cam!!!) And speaking of which, the CD continues to sell out as fast as we can order them from Chris Barber of Paws Here Productions, in Westminster, Ca.. Thank you Chris for all you do for us! I am so blown away by this! And yet another film, which, by the way features our lovely backup singer Amanda Guthrie, has wrapped up, and they have asked me to submit a CD for consideration! (Hey mom, are you proud of us?) I have written some beautiful new songs, and have begun recording them last night (update..4/25/03). Hope you like 'em!!!

We are getting more press packs sent out all over, and are particularly interested in this airplay we are receiving in Berlin, Germany, courtesy of Dirk Stursberg, Radio 98.6, Berlin! (Dirk I will have those promo items for you in the next week! Thank you for your patience, and for blasting our CD all over Berlin! We hope to be with you guys in person soon!) Maybe we can do some fund raisers in Germany, too.

So it looks like the band is going to enjoy alot of the road this year
, as we perform large shows all over the great American southwest, Canada and hopefully, Europe! Please browse the oher pages on the Crystal-Phoenix website, and read all of the other exciting news! And thank you guys for making all of this come true for us! I keep you in my heart and in my thoughts always, because you helped make our dream come true. Thank you guys!

God Bless You,
Peace and Love,

Jimmy Lee Young

ANOTHER PALADINO'S GIG !!
Crystal-Phoenix will open for Superstar
Micki Free (website here) at world famous Paladino's Club April 12th, in Tarzana, Ca.!!!! As you know , Micki was honored as the Best Male Artist at the 5th Annual Native American Music Awards, where Crystal-Phoenix was nominated in the category of Best New Group! The show is expected to sell out, and is a sure hit with local fans who have been turned on to the flavor of the up and coming Native American Music genre, thanks to Paladino's club ( especially owner Steve, and booking agent Swan), and a very successful performance by Crystal-Phoenix on their one-night only show on the Kip Winger tour in December! Says Jimmy: “I saw Micki at the First Americans in the Arts Awards on February 8th, and he looks great, and is just exploding all over the place!” As this band moves into the opening act scene, I can't believe we have been so honored to open for such talented acts! "Our group's solid lineup, including new member Dave Chalela on lead guitar, and the great Vic Grady on bass, has been working very hard to bring that artistic, melodic and cutting-edge sound to the public. With tentative dates all over the continental United States and Canada, as well as setting their sites on Europe where airplay has picked up, especially in Berlin, Germany ( radio 98.6 Berlin, Dirk Stursberg show), the excitement in the group is at an all time high.
- Says drummer Gil Gabaldon II: "Everybody is having SUCH a great time! Carl Rabun and Amanda Guthrie, the backup singers along with Jimmy sound UNBELIEVABLY beautiful! Their 3 voices together make such a unique sound! This was especially evident at the Paladino's gig with Kip Winger, where the room seemed to be swimming with their harmonies. It drove the audiences WILD! You could have heard a pin drop in the room while we were playing, and after each song they were just CRAZY!!! We got 3 ENCORES that night, and it's becoming a tradition to play all night!"

"... And Jimmy has been working harder than ever to bring support for literacy programs everywhere we play! It's a great vibe we are enjoying!" The group is currently preparing for several shows all over the great American Southwest, and Jimmy who has completed volumes of songs, (some of them started as far back as 1999) is preparing to do his first soundtrack for a film by Executive Producer, Mr. Ray Tracy, (see details in next section - under ' SOUNDTRACK OFFER') - - who among his many talents, is one of the most respected creators of Authentic Native American Jewelry in the world! The group is also being considered for opening slots for the likes of such legendary performers as Buffy St. Marie! When the general public gets hold of the growing Native American Music genre, Paladino's will be remembered for being at the frontline of the L.A. Native Music scene.

DON"T MISS THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rock on...JIMMY

Dear Fans,

What an exciting time for all of us at Crystal-Phoenix!
As you know, we attended the 11th annual First Americans in the Arts awards presentation at the Beverly Hilton, Saturday, February 8th.

I was invited by Ms. Camille Nighthorse, who has championed our cause ever since we met at the Native American Music awards last September. Once again we were in the company of some our favorite folks, namely Linda Whitewolf, who was cheerful and funny as ever. We love you Linda!

Also attending this star studded event were some of our heroes, including Master of Ceremonies Wes Studi. Everyone was so friendly! Gil Birmingham, given an award for his outstanding performance in a TV series, (and also appeared in Wild Wild West, Skins, Family Law (CBS), and Dreamkeeper (ABC)) was in attendance , and is a real gentleman).

Saginaw Grant, who appeared in Skinwalkers, War Party, Devil's Cove, Picket fences, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Baywatch and the Indiana Jones Chronicles, was honored for best supporting actor in a TV role.

I met and chatted with Adam Beach, who can currently be seen in MGM's epic Windtalkers, and was one of our favorite actors from the movies Dance Me Outside and Smoke Signals. His ladyfriend was equally interesting and I have it on a handshake they they may be showing up to my appearance on the Dan Smoke Show, in Ontario soon! Wow! I also chatted with the talented and lovely Ms. Irene Bedard, who starred in Smoke Signals with Adam Beach.

BIONIC WOMAN MATERIALIZES !!:
One of the highlights of the evening was meeting award presenter Ms. Lindsey Wagner (!) who came over to our table and signed autographs for the whole band. Can you believe even the Bionic Woman was there?! Anyone who is a fan of the movie Smoke Signals knows director Chris Eyre, who was honored for Outstanding Achievement for his works: Skinwalkers, and the independent movie, Skins. Did you know that his creative efforts and skills were noticed by none other than Robert Redford who brought him in to direct PBS Skinwalkers on Mystery theater?
One of the biggest thrills though, was meeting Mr. Tom Bee of Soar records, who among the many other achievements, wrote (We've Got) Blue Skies, which was recorded by Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 on their worldwide hit album Maybe Tomorrow. Tom Bee is a legend in his own time, having recorded with numerous artists, with hits spanning 3 decades. In 1989, Mr. bee formed Sound of America Records (SOAR), and his credits go on and on! He is an amazing individual and was unfailingly polite to everyone ( and I mean everyone) who wanted to just say "HI!". When you meet some people, you feel like you 've been in the presence of greatness and talent. Tom Bee is just that.
- P.S. Mayor Martin Chavez, of Albuquerque, proclaimed July 27th 2002, to be Tom Bee day, in recognition of his numerous accomplishments. MR. Bee, you are one of our favorite artist-heroes!
I also talked with Micki Free who is tentatively scheduled to play a show at the world famous Paladino's in Tarzana, where if you remember, we opened for Kip Winger on his national tour. Micki is as charismatic and personable as ever - Rock On Micki!

The list goes on and on. I made several new friends, many of them of like mind, who are interested in raising the fight against illiteracy everywhere, and have joined me in my efforts to bring books to our youth, and build youth reading programs.( On that note special thanks to the Kern County Library System for giving me an outlet in this area, and for giving us this great award on April 8th for our efforts).

A SOUNDTRACK OFFER IN THE AIR?
But the best news is this: Camille Nighthorse has been apparently playing our CD "APACHE" for everyone she knows, and she once wrote to me to tell me the reception was outstanding! She introduced me to Mr. Ray Tracy who is Executive Producer of an upcoming film 'workingly' entitled "Dreamcatcher". Mr. Tracy told me that he heard the song APACHE and played it over and over when he heard it. I gave him our press kit including a CD, and he called me at 9:00 am this morning to tell me he LOVES the song Idyllwild, and he wants me to work on the soundtrack for his film! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I told him that I would be laying down tracks this week, from the collection of songs that I've just completed, and would send them to him ASAP!

Mr. Tracy's partner, McKay Daines (www.mckaydaines.com) is the producer of 'Dreamcatcher'.
McKay is also the producer of an upcoming film, "Joan of Arc" to be shot with Mira Sorvino as Joan. Tracy's other partners are Ron Maxwell (director), Bob Rehme, and Nick Grillo (prducers) - who are currently the makers of Ted Turner's "Gods and Generals" epic Civil War Film being released next week. Curiosity seekers can visit Mckay's website for more information on their projects. NOTE: Still another film is being produced in the Native American genre, by the best selling author Janelle Taylor called "Lakota Dawn", to be shot next year:

Mr. Tracy also mentioned that he is interested in getting the very talented group BRULE, and the lovely solo artist Jana who was also honored at the Nammy's this year! I met with Jana backstage at that event, and she is SUCH a touch of class! I feel so honored to be included with performers who are so talented and make such beautiful music! Thank you, Ray and thank you Camille!

Well, we are still working our heads off, and I'm ready for all the dates to be set for all these wonderful shows being offered to us. I gave Camille a handshake agreement to do her show in the Grand Canyon soon, and you can look for her as a featured native dancer in our upcoming video for APACHE! I should have some dates for you guys soon, so keep in touch.

Also, I want to say, once again, thank you to our mentor Mr. Daryl Dragon for always helping us to find our way through this difficult business, and for spending so much time at this site. And also to his lovely and talented wife, Toni Tennille. I was watching VH1 the other night and caught a video of live performance on German television, where they played, "Do That To Me One More Time". The performance was flawless, and Ms. Tennille was absolutely stunning. If you haven't yet, check out their website, www.tonitennile.com, and see her streamed performances. My personal favorite is her rendition of Etta James's, "At Last". Well folks, thank you once again for all the victories we are enjoying. We'll be in touch soon.

God Bless You All,
Peace and Love, Jimmy

12/10/2002

Well guys, I am happy report that yesterdays recording session went great!

Deb Buchanan's cover version of 'Beautiful Child' by Stevie Nicks, recorded on their Tusk album, is FINISHED!!! We had a really relaxed recording session at Deb's own FBN Studios. Her voice is as lovely as ever, and I found that the magic of our vocal mix is alive and well. We hadn't recorded together in about 2 years, but it felt as if we'd sung together just yesterday! I sang all of Lindsay Buckingham's backing vocal parts and had a blast doing it!!!

What a great way to round out the weekend after that great gig at Paladino's opening for Kip Winger! Speaking of which, I got a call from Swan, the sound guy I mentioned in my last letter. They are definitely interested in hiring us for another gig, and plans are already in the works! Stay tuned!!!
Look out L.A., here come's Crystal-Phoenix!!!
Rock On!!!!!!!!!
Jimmy

Dear CP Fans,
Hey guys! Just wanted to take some time to thank all the people who came to our first national gig opening for none other than rock superstar, Mr. Kip Winger!

The show was a great success! We were called back onstage for a Paladino's record breaking 3 ENCORES!!! I STILL can't get over the noise the audience made!!! Very special thanks to the owner Steve, who won't let anyone near his Crystal-Phoenix CD! Thanks a bunch to the great sound tech, Swan ( who is very Robert Plant, and has a great Irish accent for all you interested ladies!!!). He does an incredible sound job! ...and a Very Special thanks also to promoter Myke Pryce of Paladino's for setting this up! Call on us anytime, Myke!!!

After our set, Swan asked the audience how many encores they wanted, and the response was overwhelming!!! After the show the club asked us for more press packets, so we hope to see the Paladino's stage again soon.

Also, special thanks to the guys: Mr. Gil Gabaldon II, my partner in crime on drums, Amanda Guthrie and Damien Carl Rabun on backing vocals, Vic Grady on bass, and our special guest for the night, Dave Chalela on percussion! You guys all rocked!!!

Dear CP fans.

Well it feels great to sit and write to you all again from rocking and rolling, Southern California. I haven't had a chance to write in awhile, but I can tell by the numbers that you guys have been logging on to the site for band info. After being nominated and attending the Native American Music Awards, we have been snowed in with work!

Thanks to all of you who voted for us during the Nammy's! It was a star studded night we'll never forget. We met everyone from Crystal Gayle to Felipe Rose, from the Village People!I - also met Nammy winners Janice Marie, Jana, Micki Free of Shalamar, Martha Redbone who won in our category, Jeneda Benally from a GREAT new punk band called Blackfire, and others! We also met Debra Crawford, from Felipe Rose's camp, who has begun helping us with promo, etc., and Camille Nighthorse, who has also been spreading the word about the CD, " APACHE". Both of these ladies are beautiful people, and we are grateful for your help! Thank you!

Since the Nomination for Best New Group, our careers have taken this quantum leap that is spinning us dizzy! We have been picked up by 2 FM Stations in Berlin, and are waiting to hear from stations in Canada that have showed interest. Dear Crystal-Phoenix Fans

Wow! So here we are again! So much has been happening lately that we can hardly stand it. First of all, we would like to thank all of the visitors to the CP website, (check out that counter on the bottom of the ‘home page’!!!) and all those who voted for us to win at the Nammys. The nomination has already done so much to give us needed exposure, and GREAT offers from the casinos in the great Southwest! We WILL be attending the Nammy's so keep us in your prayers.

Special thanks to KSUT, Four Corners Radio, especially Andrea Enriquez, Music Director, for literally falling in love with the CD, and blasting it all over the four corners area, including:

90.1 FM 89.5 FM Durango La Plata County
100.1 FM Mancos/ Cortez
105.3 Farmington Pagosa Springs
98.2 Silverton
91.3 Southern Ute Community radio Ignacio/ Bayfield
91.9 Dolores
91.7 KGLP Gallup

In a letter to Jimmy, she writes the following review: " The music is great, actually I think it's excellent and I'm confident our listeners will agree. I can't even say which one I like the best, they’re all great tracks! I love the mellowness of " Calling Out" and the beat of "Sweet Freedom" ...the entire CD is just beyond amazing! You all have so much talent. I can see why it sold out!" I love the lyrics on "Apache", and I'm sure our listeners will fall in love with it too."
WOW!

NOTE: Check out C/P's new AIRPLAY PAGE !!

Thank you Andrea! And thanks to you,we will be targeting the southwest for touring dates this fall and we are all very excited about the response this CD is getting.

Also, in other NEWS: Jimmy Lee Young SINGS BACKING VOCALS ON DEB BUCHANAN's RE-MAKE OF FLEETWOOD MAC'S, "BEAUTIFUL CHILD"!!!!!!!! If you remember PAT BENATAR'S recent tour, Deb, lead guitarist for the Deena Noroian band opened Pat's show at the Sun theater in Anaheim, Ca. Says Jimmy: "This song was recorded during an unusually tight schedule for Deb and I. It's been exciting and motivating ! I love her voice and I love to sing with her. Our friendship goes back a long way, and I was very honored to be asked to work on the song. I have said in the past that our voices make a unique and unusual blend, that I've never been able to get with anyone else. I love working with several singers I know, but there is just some kind of magical energy when Deb and I sing together. This song is a perfect example of that magic, as is "Apache". " Fans familiar with songs not featured on CP's current CD can look forward to Deb working on "Dreamer", a live favorite with CP fans.

Also, CP will be featured in an article scheduled to appear in Milwaukee's Shepards Express newspaper next week.

Sales of the CD have picked up AGAIN, and this time as far away as New York, Florida, and the Czech republic! Stay tuned as CP continues it's European radio conquest! Very special thanks to Radio Milo of Belgium, for its support and airplay, reaching 200,000 European listeners!

VIDEO SHOOT: Also slated for the fall; Crystal-Phoenix will be shooting 2 videos. One will be a live performance, and one will be a story-line concept. Shooting is scheduled for late fall/ early winter.

UPCOMING RECORDING: Tracks for the new CD Jimmy has written will be recorded beginning in early spring. The songs are great CP fare! (A word to independant musicians- if this all sounds costly, it can be. But remember we are independant musicians, and if we can do it, you can, too. So get out there and MAKE ROCK RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!! )

Well, everyone has been working ESPECIALLY hard getting ready for the fall schedule, and with the Nammy's less than two weeks away, we are all abuzz with what's happening on the Crystal-Phoenix front.

Keep in touch and keep your fingers crossed for us! And don't forget to - - Rock On !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - - !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Peace, Jimmy

07/18/02- NAMMY'S STORY, CONTINUED...

On the heels of becoming the most requested CD for an unprecedented 52 weeks at KCEL radio, 106.9fm, California City, California, the band recently received notification of their 'Nammy' nomination.

Gil Gabaldon II
, drummer for the band said in an interview, " I can't believe this is all happening! We were working so hard to push our CD and try to maintain the number one spot at KCEL, and then we got the word about the Nammy nomination and we just freaked! KCEL called us in for a live interview right away, and the phones lit up! We are really grateful for all of this, and especially to our fans who support us at the shows, and with CD sales, and to the boardmembers at the Nammy's for choosing us. We couldn't be happier! And once again thanks to our moms, and families". The band plans to attend the show slated for September 7th, and plans are in the works for a performance at the VIP party afterwards. Crystal Gayle will be hosting the show this year, which is glimmering with a list of well known artists, from Honorary Trustees, Wayne Newton, Paul Winter, John Densmore (of the Doors) and R. Carlos Nakai, to nominees in the Native Heart category including Bruce Cockburn (Eagle Cries), Jeff ball, (Prairie Runner), the late Joey Ramone (One Nation Under), Neil Young (Eagle Cries) and Scott August (Distant Spirits).

But the real news here is the band that is sneaking up on the music industry via independant radio and the internet. After spending the last year struggling to maintain the number one slot at KCEL radio, lead singer/ songwriter Jimmy Lee Young had this to say: "A year ago I called KCEL to see if they would play us. They heard the CD and asked us to play a fourth of July gig. I went in for an on-air interview and they played the CD. The phones started to light up after the first 2 songs! Then we went to the number one slot almost immediately. I NEVER thought we would stay there this long! We have DIE-HARD fans that say they'll go with us all the way! I think that's been one of the main driving forces behind our initial success. I never feel like we're in this alone. Our families, friends, fans and radio people have done alot to support this project! It feels great to be asked to bring these songs to poetry society meetings, live concerts, etc. And once again, I have to give credit to our "mentor" and webmeister Daryl Dragon, ‘the Captain’ half of The Captain and Tennille, who helped us to get organized and has never asked for anything in return (except maybe for 2 tickets to Tahitii!). Mr. D, thank you!"

Fans are reminded that votes for the band can be cast at www.nammys.com and tickets for the show are available while supplies last! Rock On Crystal-Phoenix, - - Rock On !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well guys, here we are again in cyberspace! First of all jimmy and the gang want to thank the 500 or so people who crowded around the stage and rocked at the Desert Tortoise Days Festival. Wow! We had no idea so many people would show up.! The concert started at 7:00 pm, and we rocked until 8:30. Then, one of the coolest singers, Elizabeth Cervantes took the stage playing the rockingest set of oldies until 11:00. Liz asked Jimmy to join her on Borrn on the Bayou, by CCR (which happens to be one of Jimmy's favorite songs). The crowd went wild!!! Jimmy ended up playing nearly the whole set with her, and plans are in the works for another outdoor gig later in the summer/ early fall. Congrats guys!!!

Special thanks once again to KCEL for sponsoring the show, and to the Desert Tortoise Days Commitee. A big thank you to Deb Buchanan who ran sound, and to Justin Edwards our faithful head roadie, and sound assistant. You guys rock! And most of all, to our backup musicians Dave, Jeff and Carl! You rule!!! Check out the shows link for info on the Edwards AFB talent contest, and CP's featured guest slot! Rock and Roll !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shows: Crystal-Phoenix will be performing LIVE at Edward AFB, home of the Space Shuttle, on Tuesday May 29th at 7:oo pm at the Stripes Lounge in the Oasis Center. Based on growing popularity on local radio, the band was asked to be this year’s featured artists at the basewide talent show. What an honor! The band will be performing songs from the APACHE CD, as well as some new songs Jimmy hopes to record next Spring. Hold on Edwards, cause ROCK IS BACK, and Crystal-Phoenix is at the front lines. DON"T MISS THIS SHOW!
THIS JUST IN: Jimmy and Gil will be in for an interview at KCEL on thursday, May 31st, at 7:00 pm PRIMETIME!!!! An accoustic set is planned, along with interviews and an informative talk about Surferzrule! Daryl Dragon's brilliant concept to open the internet to artists!! Don't miss it!!!!

In other news: Jimmy continues to make the rounds of museums, libraries and local radio. The little beatnik has helped Edwin Vasques, local painter/ poet to establish a poetry reading society which is growing rapidly and meeting at more and more sites. Long live the arts!!!

Also, in just seven weeks, CP's CD will have been at the number one spot at KCEL for exactly 1 year!!! The guys are working overtime to meet that goal. Says Gil," We were excited to just get on the radio last year. We never expected to go right to number 1. I can't believe that Apache and Sweet Freedom have been alternating at the number 1 requested song slot for this long. We now have 8 songs in the regular rotation over there at KCEL. WOW! And it seems Jimmy is just OBSESSED with traveling aroung to promote the CD and Surferzrule, his latest passion. Daryl Dragon has been such a good influence on Jimmy, who has learned computers, and is doing all our promo, etc., etc. He's like that- he won't stop until he's mastered whatever he needs to to get us further down the line. I was hoping he'd get some sleep after we finished recording, but he's still going 500 miles an hour!!! Says Jimmy," We might've gotten to number 1 at KCEL , but you can't just stop. It's a step we have to use to go farther. We are doing all we can to stay at number 1 till we make a year! You know, we had no real direction until Daryl stepped in and helped us get it together. Just watch what he's going to do for music with Surferzrule!. If your not in the know, check out the website he's putting together PRONTO!!! If you’re in music - YOU NEED TO SEE THIS!!!! It's the thing that gives me hope for my music, and for the industry in general, which is in shambles right now. If you don't believe me, turn on your radio, or read this article !!!"

Band News: Well ,since its inception, Jimmy and Gil's CP have been blessed with the backup talents of some very fine musicians. We regret the we will be bidding adieu to Dave Yergensen and Jeff Zumkley who are actually Cover Musicians who work the Antelope Valley’s small club circuit playing cover versions of older rock tunes. Dave will be around lending his technical expertise for website activity, as well as possibly adding tracks to next years project, and both musicians hope to keep in touch with the guys. Carl Rabun will be featured on backing vocals for the summer’s activities. More news as it comes!!!
Thank you guys, for helping us with these GREAT shows and good luck in all your endeavors.

Well, looks like that's all for now.

Peace,Love and Rock and Roll!

James Lee Young

- Hello once again from the Crystal-Phoenix home front!

The storm continues to rage here at the front lines of rock and roll!

As of last week, Crystal-Phoenix’s “ APACHE” has once again SOLD OUT, thanks to you, our devoted listeners! Apparently, word- of-mouth has spread the news! New orders have been placed and are being stocked immediately (hint-hint!), thanks to the lightning fast Chris Barber at “PAWS HERE PRODUCTIONS” at the Headway Complex in Westminster, Ca. Chris handles all Crystal-Phoenix CD production, and is also a €ne artist and jazz singer, in her own right. When I called her, she said, “ My Gosh, you guys are ying through those things!” Thank you Chris!

Also, as of this week, “APACHE” remains the NUMBER #1 MOST REQUESTED CD at KCEL! A million thanks once again to KCEL radio and Deejays Charlie Warren and Weezer and Jazz, for making us number #1 most requested CD at KCEL -Variety Radio in California City California, just North of L.A.. High desert radio hasn’t been the same! SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ROCK IS BACK, AND Crystal-Phoenix IS HERE TO STAY!!!

And special thanks to DARYL DRAGON, The Captain half of “The Captain and Tennille”, for making this site possible. Daryl has worked literally night and day getting this site up. From all us guys at CP-” MR. D, YOU RULE!!!!” We will ALWAYS credit you for bringing us to cyberspace and the world!

As I mentioned, “APACHE” has been the number one requested CD since July 2001, and holding! Requests are coming in all the time according to Charlie Warren.I’ve done several live appearances on the air at KCEL Radio, and arrangements have been made to bring these interviews and live performances to you via Audio Streaming as they occur! One show has already been taped, and another is scheduled for Friday, March 30th, on Charlie’s show. (Check out the press link for more details. If you’re in the AV area call 1–877–373-KCEL 106.9 for requests, or to call in, and info.)

We have all been working night and day to keep up with rehearsals, radio, and the our new baby, this site. Several shows are in the works as my voice is finally healing, and I’m planning a short acoustic performance to be taped live at KCEL..

If you are on this site, then you are probably aware that copies of our CD are now available through CDbaby.com. We have been working very hard at bringing you our music at the lowest price possible, as conveniently as possibe.

Also we have recently signed on with PlayStream.com to bring you samples of our songs, radio interviews and performances via audio streaming, as well.

So alot of work and alot of playing, but Crystal-Phoenix is invigorated and ready for the road, so stay tuned for more news as things develop for us.

- Hi again from Crystal-Phoenix!

Here we are again, and there is so much brewing lately!

Once again thank you to all those hard working Radio folks at KCEL paving our road to the top! And of course to the Captain and Tennille for making this website a reality. Big Thank-You's all around.

WE have continued to hold our chart position as the most requested CD longer than any other on KCEL to date. WOW! Is this really happening to us? I was on the road recently, (as usual!), and I tuned to KCEL 106.9FM and lo and behold, " APACHE" was thundering its way across the airwaves! Have any of you musicians out there had that happen to you yet? It was the FREAKIEST feeling! I used to dream ( or obssess, I should say!) about the days when I could turn on the radio and hear my song playing to the wide world.(Before I'd even written any!) I get this deep feeling that I've accomplished something by getting the positive message of that song out finally. To all my Native brothers, and to people everywhere: as the song says-... believe in love! I strongly suggest that everyone pick up your guitars and your poetry and write, write write. Let's fill the airwaves with music!

On the busy side. Crystal-Phoenix will NOT be doing the first spring concert on Edward, AFB, but WILL be doing a FREE concert there in the late spring, early summer-stay tuned! Tentative dates will be announced, as well as schedule changes, if any. At this time, many of the dates are still in the planning stage, and the band is so busy that there have been some scheduling conflicts. However, the May 4th concert in California City is a definite go!!! Activities at the Desert Tortoise Days in California City include a FREE concert by Crystal-Phoenix. For details call KCEL RADIO toll free at 1-877-373-KCEL and ask for Charlie Warren !!! Tell him Jimmy sent you!!!

Well gang, it looks like we are all healing from the various chest colds, flu, sinus infections, and bronchial crud that swept over the desert like a plague! What a winter it has been for these lads! Now that we are all on our feet, thank God, we should be finalizing many of the business doings (concert planning, etc.), and hitting the road. I shall try my best to sit down at least once a week and keep in touch with you all. It's becoming great therapy!!!

Thank you for the great turn out at all the shows last season, for lighting up the phones at KCEL, and for supporting the CD sales. We hope to see you all again real soon. Let's rock and roll through another year!

God Bless You All,
Peace and Love,
Jimmy and Crystal-Phoenix - - Rock on!!!!!!!!

03/04/2002
Greetings Crystal-Phoenix fans.

As you know, a firestorm of activity has hit the CP front.

First, a whopping Thank You, to KCEL radio 106.9 out of California City, for making us their number one requested band/ CD for an incredible 28 weeks to date. Special thanks to Charlie Warren, Wheezer and Jazz, and all the crew. And thanks to all our friends and family and to our fans for showering us with your support.

And to Daryl Dragon and his lovely wife Toni for once again 'Taking the time". You guys all rule!!!

As you know, Gil and Jimmy hired the talented Carl Rabun to sing backup. Carl was at the last 3 gigs and sang great!

Most recently, Mr. Jeff Zumkley was added in the supporting group on bass, and has been rehearsing and looking forward to his first gig, which is scheduled for Apr 30 at Edwards Air Force Base as special guests at the base teen talent show!

An outdoor concert follows in May, as CP headlines the first outdoor Spring Concert at Edwards also.

Also hired to play lead guitar was Mr. Dave Yergensen. Dave and Jeff both live here in the Antelope Valley just north of Los Angeles. Dave is currently enjoying playing with several bands in the area, while Jeff has left all other endeavors to work with Crystal-Phoenix.

The guys are auditioning backup singers and acoustic guitarists for the upcoming shows. Most notably, if you’re reading this, our website is up and running, and still being designed and fashioned by Reno Man! Man oh man, Reno Man, you rule!

Since we are just getting it going you will be seeing alot of changes in the upcoming weeks so log on and watch us grow!

If you are in the Antelope Valley tune in to station KCEL 106.9 FM for your favorite Crystal-Phoenix tunes, or call ( please call ! ) toll free at 1-877-373-KCEL to request!

Very shortly, listeners in the Ridgecrest area will be able to tune in and hear Crystal-Phoenix, courtesy of John, owner of IROC radio, your Ridgecrest classic rock station. More details as they unfold!

And now the health news! All of the members of the band are recuperating from that plague that has swept over the entire valley, and most of Los Angeles! Literally all of the band and crew have been sick with coughs and colds. Yikes! Jimmy still sounds a little like Rod Stewart but he's gonna be o.k. Everybody else has cycled through it and are getting better. Get well boys 'cuz the road's calling!

If you are familiar with the show, you will notice some new songs at the upcoming shows, that will most likely be included in the next project (tentatively set for Spring 2003 if the schedule allows.) The band has been testing some of Jimmy's new songs to great reviews.

Also check the out the Lancaster Museum of Art's poetry reading, headed by Mr. Edwin Vasquez, celebrated local painter and poet. Jimmy can often be found singing acoustic versions of the songs at these events. Most recently, Jimmy was given an original Edwin Vasquez painting in appreciation of his help and support. To the poets of our time-ROCK ON! At the presentation, Jimmy quipped," I feel like a beatnik!" The museum offers a variety of art on display daily. For more info, contact the Lancaster Museum of Art .

This news board will be updated weekly so keep in touch! - - Rock on!!!!!!!!
